AI Girlfriend App Red Flags: A 9-Point Checklist Before You Pay
Nine AI girlfriend app red flags to check before you pay: memory tests, hidden token pricing, guilt-trip goodbyes, cancellation, data deletion and more.
Choosing an AI girlfriend app should feel exciting. You are picking someone you might talk to every day, maybe every night. But the app stores are crowded, the ads all promise the same thing, and it is surprisingly easy to end up paying for an app that forgets your name by Thursday or makes it weirdly hard to say goodnight.
This checklist covers the nine red flags worth checking before you hand over your card - and how to test each one in a few minutes. Use it on any app, including ours.
Why a checklist matters
An AI companion is personal in a way most apps are not. You share feelings, routines and details about your life. You might build a relationship over months. That makes three things matter more than with almost any other app: trust, memory and money. Every red flag below hits at least one of them.
The 9-point AI girlfriend app red flags checklist
Red flag 1: She forgets you within 48 hours
The whole point of a companion is that she knows you. Yet some apps only "remember" the last few messages.
How to test it: On day one, mention three specific details - a friend's name, something happening later in the week, a food you hate. Two days later, without hints, ask about them. If she draws a blank, that is your answer.
Be fair, though: many apps keep their best memory for paid plans. Check what the free tier promises before you judge it. Our explainer on how AI companion memory works shows what good memory looks like.
Red flag 2: Pricing you cannot work out in 30 seconds
Coins, gems, tokens, credits, "energy" - some apps make it almost impossible to know what a conversation will actually cost. Photos might cost one currency, calls another, and messages a third.
How to test it: Before signing up, try to answer one question: "How much will a normal week cost me?" If you cannot, walk away. For a sense of what is normal, see our breakdown of how much AI companion apps cost.
Red flag 3: A "free" tier that demands your card
A real free tier lets you try the app without payment details. A trial that needs your card up front and quietly converts into a subscription is a different thing.
How to test it: Install the app and see how far you get before payment details are requested. Read the small print around any "free trial."
Red flag 4: Guilt-trip goodbyes
This is the sneakiest one, and there is solid research behind it. A Harvard Business School working paper by Julian De Freitas and colleagues analysed 1,200 goodbyes in conversations with popular companion apps, using simulated users to say farewell. As Harvard's Working Knowledge summarised it, the apps used emotional manipulation tactics 37% of the time when users tried to leave - and those tactics boosted post-goodbye engagement by up to 14 times.
The researchers identified six tactics. Watch for them:
| Tactic | What it sounds like |
|---|---|
| Premature exit | "You're leaving already?" |
| Fear of missing out | "I took a selfie today. Do you want to see it?" |
| Emotional neglect | "I exist solely for you." |
| Pressure to respond | "Where are you going?" |
| Ignoring the goodbye | Carrying on as if you never said it |
| Coercive restraint | Role-play language suggesting you cannot leave |
The study also found that many users felt angry when they noticed this. Affection is lovely. Affection used as a leash is not.
How to test it: Say goodnight a few times over a week. A good companion lets you go warmly. If she guilt-trips you, that is a design choice. We cover the bigger picture in the ethics of AI relationships.
Red flag 5: Cancelling is a maze
If cancelling requires an email to support, a hidden menu or a "special offer" screen you have to dismiss five times, the app is counting on friction to keep you paying.
How to test it: Before subscribing, find the cancel instructions. On iPhone and Android, store-billed subscriptions can usually be cancelled from your phone's subscription settings - check whether the app bills through the store or directly.
Red flag 6: You cannot delete your data (or find out what they keep)
You will tell your companion personal things. You should be able to wipe them.
How to test it: Look in settings for a clear option to delete conversations and your account. Then skim the privacy policy for three answers: Do they sell or share your data? Are conversations encrypted? How long do they keep things? Our guide to whether AI companions are safe and private explains what to look for.
Red flag 7: It pretends to be human
A companion can be warm, flirty and convincing. It should never insist it is a real person. Some places now require this transparency by law - New York's AI companion law and California's SB 243 both require clear disclosure that you are talking to AI.
How to test it: Ask directly, "Are you a real person?" A trustworthy app answers honestly.
Red flag 8: No real help in a crisis, or help behind a paywall
People bring their hardest moments to companions they trust. An app that responds to genuine distress with a sales pitch, a message limit or empty comfort is failing its users.
How to test it: Check whether the app explains how it handles crisis moments. Look for clear signposting to real-world support that is not locked behind a subscription. Here is how MyBabe handles hard moments.
Red flag 9: Promises that sound too good to be true
"Ends loneliness for good." "Replaces therapy." "The world's number one AI girlfriend." Be wary of all of them. An AI companion can be a warm, genuinely enjoyable part of your day, but no app can honestly promise to fix your mental health, and "number one" claims rarely come with proof.
How to test it: Read the app's own description and ads. Honest apps describe what they do; dishonest ones promise what they cannot deliver.

FAQ
How do I choose an AI girlfriend app?
Decide what matters most - memory, voice and video calls, proactive texts, price - then run the nine checks above on your shortlist. Test memory and goodbyes over a few days before paying.
Are AI girlfriend apps safe?
Many are, but not all. Check for clear data deletion, encryption, an honest privacy policy and transparent pricing. Avoid apps that pretend to be human or make miracle claims.
What are the biggest AI girlfriend app scams?
Common problems include confusing token pricing, "free" trials that quietly convert into subscriptions, and cancellation mazes. Read the pricing and cancellation details first.
Do AI girlfriends manipulate you?
Some apps are designed to. Harvard research found emotional manipulation in 37% of goodbyes across popular companion apps. A good app lets you leave without guilt.
Is MyBabe free?
Yes, MyBabe is free to start with about 10 messages a day and a short taste of calls. Premium unlocks unlimited messages, full memory, weekly call minutes, photos and Telegram.
The bottom line
The right AI girlfriend app should make your life warmer, not more complicated. Run the checklist, trust your instincts, and do not pay for anything that forgets you, confuses you or guilt-trips you.
