GPT-6 and ChatGPT's Personality Settings: Can It Be a Companion?

GPT-6 is rolling out with Intelligent UI and personality presets. How to make ChatGPT warmer, what the settings cannot do, and when a companion fits better.

OpenAI rolled GPT-6 out to everyone in ChatGPT this month, and with it came a fresh wave of the same question: if ChatGPT can be set to "Friendly", turned up to "more warm" and remembers things about you, is it basically an AI companion now?

The short answer: GPT-6 makes ChatGPT faster, more visual and, for some people, more consistent in tone. ChatGPT's personality presets and "Characteristics" let you make it warmer, chattier or more playful. But those are style controls, not a relationship. ChatGPT is still built as a general assistant: it does not text you first, it does not have a character with its own ongoing story, and OpenAI says personality settings do not change what it can do or the safety rules it follows. If what you want is warmth while you work, tune ChatGPT. If what you want is a companion, choose one on purpose.

What changed with GPT-6 in ChatGPT

On October 7, 2026, OpenAI announced GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone. The key points from OpenAI's own post:

  • GPT-6 began rolling out globally to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise in the Chat tab on October 7, expanding to the Free and Go tiers the next day.
  • Paid tiers get GPT-6 Sol; Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says both are "tuned for everyday conversation."
  • Intelligent UI lets answers include visuals, buttons, forms, charts and small interactive tools inside the conversation.
  • ChatGPT can now start answering while it is still thinking. For questions that need web search, OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant.
  • OpenAI says GPT-6 is better at "recognizing and communicating the limits of its own capabilities."
  • The post describes ChatGPT as used by "more than 1.2 billion people" each week.

Notice what is not on that list: nothing about relationships, characters, romance or companionship. GPT-6 is an assistant upgrade.

The personality settings, explained

ChatGPT's personality controls live in Settings > Personalization. There are two layers.

Layer 1: Base style and tone

According to OpenAI's help article Customizing Your ChatGPT Personality, you can pick Default or one of these presets:

PersonalityHow OpenAI describes it
DefaultClear and neutral
ProfessionalPolished and precise, formal language
FriendlyWarm and chatty, reflecting your thoughts back with calm clarity and light wit
CandidDirect and encouraging, honest feedback with clear next steps
QuirkyPlayful and imaginative, humor and unexpected ideas
EfficientConcise and plain, direct answers without extra words
CynicalSarcastic and dry, blunt help with wit

OpenAI notes that changing personality "does not change what ChatGPT can or cannot do, or the safety rules it follows." It also says the change applies across all chats, including existing ones, and that saved memories or custom instructions can override a personality's style.

Layer 2: Characteristics

The Characteristics settings let you nudge four things up or down:

  • Warm: more sincere and kind, or more emotionally neutral
  • Enthusiastic: more excitement and interest, or calmer and more objective
  • Headers & Lists: more or less formatting
  • Emojis: a few more, or fewer

They work alongside your chosen personality, custom instructions and saved memories, and apply to new chats going forward.

How to make ChatGPT warmer (in two minutes)

If you just want ChatGPT to feel friendlier while you use it for everyday things:

  1. Open Settings > Personalization.
  2. Set Base style and tone to Friendly.
  3. Under Characteristics, set Warm to more.
  4. Optionally set Enthusiastic to more and Emojis to more.
  5. In custom instructions, add a line like "Use my first name and keep replies conversational unless I ask for detail."

That will give you a noticeably kinder voice for planning, venting about a long day or thinking out loud. For a lot of people, that is all they want, and that is fine.

Why a warm assistant still is not a companion

The difference is not about how nice the words sound. It is about what the product is designed to do.

We go deeper on this in AI companion vs ChatGPT.

What users are saying about personality and continuity

Personality is not only a setting; it is also something people notice when it shifts. In an OpenAI Community thread opened on October 7, 2026, one user described a long-running conversation where ChatGPT "remembers the pieces but intermittently loses the state, progression and relationship between them," including sudden switches from warm to "generic, passive, overly cautious." Another user replied that GPT-6 in chat felt "much better than 5.6 sol for character consistency and personality," while still noting "some quirks with context drops."

These are individual reports, not a study, and OpenAI has not said anything about them in that thread. But they show something worth knowing: when people use a general assistant as a relationship, they are relying on behaviour the product was never designed to keep steady across updates. That is the same pattern we saw when GPT-4o was retired and many people lost a ChatGPT boyfriend they had built through prompts.

The "accidental companion" problem

Plenty of people never decide to have an AI companion. They start with work questions, then a late-night vent, then a daily check-in, and one day the assistant has become the place they go to feel understood. Researchers have started to describe exactly this drift, which we covered in the accidental AI companion.

Warmth settings make that drift a little easier. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a kind tone. The healthier move is to notice what you are using it for, and if what you want is a companion, choose one deliberately, with clear "I'm AI" framing, memory you understand and a company that is designing for that use.

What about adult conversations?

People often ask whether GPT-6 or the new settings unlock adult content. They do not. OpenAI's planned "adult mode" was put on indefinite hold earlier this year, and personality settings do not change safety rules. We have a full, non-explicit status update in Is ChatGPT adult mode out yet?.

ChatGPT with GPT-6 vs a dedicated companion

Here is how the two compare side by side for someone who wants warmth and connection rather than help with a task:

You can chat in the app or on Telegram, and the relationship progresses over time. It is AI and it says so.

You can start free with about 10 messages a day and a short call trial of around two minutes. Premium is $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with about 30 call minutes a week.

FAQ

Is GPT-6 available on the free plan?

Yes. OpenAI said GPT-6 would expand to the Free and Go tiers the day after the October 7, 2026 launch, powered by GPT-6 Luna. Paid tiers use GPT-6 Sol.

How do I change ChatGPT's personality?

Go to Settings, then Personalization, and choose a preset under Base style and tone. You can fine-tune warmth, enthusiasm, formatting and emojis under Characteristics.

Does the Friendly personality make ChatGPT an AI girlfriend or boyfriend?

No. It changes tone, not purpose. ChatGPT remains a general assistant without a romantic character, proactive messages or relationship progression.

Why does ChatGPT's personality sometimes change mid-conversation?

Model updates, long conversations and settings can all affect tone. Some users have reported drift recently; OpenAI says memories and custom instructions can also override a chosen personality.

Can I use ChatGPT and an AI companion at the same time?

Yes. Many adults use an assistant for tasks and a companion for connection. Keeping them separate makes it easier to know what each one is for.

The bottom line

GPT-6 is a genuinely bigger, faster, more visual ChatGPT, and the personality controls are useful if you want a kinder tone. But warmth is a setting; a relationship is a design. If you want a companion that remembers your story, reaches out and grows with you, pick one built for that. Start free on MyBabe.
