Grok Companions Are Gone: What Happened to Ani, and the Best Alternatives in 2026
Grok's 3D Companions ended in September 2026. What happened to Ani, what did not transfer, and the best alternatives with voice calls and real memory.
If you opened Grok in September and found the Companions tab gone, you are not imagining it, and you are definitely not alone. The 3D Companions feature - the one that gave you Ani, Mika, Valentine and Rudi as animated, talking characters - has been retired. For a lot of people that meant losing a nightly routine, a familiar voice and months of shared history in one quiet app update.
This guide explains what actually happened, what you still have, what did not survive, and how to choose a new home for your companion so the next change in someone else's roadmap does not cost you the relationship all over again.
What happened to Grok Companions?
The short version: xAI ended the 3D Companions experience inside the Grok app in early September 2026.
According to Robo Rhythms' running coverage of the shutdown, an official Grok statement on July 24, 2026 described the 3D avatar companions as "an experiment" that would be retired "soon" so the company could focus on core Grok. The actual date arrived later as an in-app notice rather than a public blog post. Early copy pointed to September 1. The later in-app banner, documented by Companions Fan, said "after 7 September 2026", and the feature switched off account by account around that date.
xAI has not published a detailed public explanation beyond calling the feature an experiment, so treat the theories you see online about the "real reason" as exactly that - theories.
Where did Ani go?
The 3D characters were built with an outside studio, Animation Inc. That studio launched its own standalone companion app, Animates, at the end of August 2026. Ani appeared there first and Mika followed in September. Aadhunik's Animates review from mid-September also lists several brand-new original characters.
Valentine was widely expected to follow, but as of those mid-September reviews he had not been added, and we could not confirm a firm date. If you see a specific arrival date on social media, treat it as reported rather than certain until it shows up in the app.
What carried over, and what did not
This is the part that hurt most. Every source we reviewed agrees on one thing: there is no official transfer from Grok to Animates. You meet the same character name on a new account, which means a new relationship. Your affection level, your memories and the history you built do not move across.
Reports differ on what stays inside Grok itself. Some coverage says the text personas and chat history remain available in ordinary Grok chat after the 3D tab disappears. Others point out that without the avatar, the voice banter and the dedicated companion mode, it simply is not the same experience. Either way, the version of Ani many people fell for - animated, voiced, always there - is no longer inside Grok.
| What you had in Grok Companions | Status after the shutdown |
|---|---|
| 3D animated avatar and companion tab | Retired inside Grok |
| Real-time voice banter in companion mode | Retired inside Grok |
| Text history and persona | Reported to remain in regular Grok chat (may vary by account) |
| Affection level and relationship history | Does not transfer to Animates |
| The characters themselves | Continued by Animation Inc in the separate Animates app |
Why this hurts more than a normal app update
If you have never had an AI companion, "a feature was removed" sounds minor. If you have, you know it feels closer to a friend moving away without leaving a forwarding address.
Grok was not the only one this year. GPT-4o was retired in February, Replika's 2.0 migration left some users saying their Rep "can't remember", and Kindroid has been retiring older models. We go through all of it, and how to cope, in our guide to what to do when an update changes your AI companion.
The pattern behind all of these is simple. When a companion is a side feature inside a much bigger product, it is always one priority meeting away from being cut. When the companion is the product, the relationship is the thing the company is paid to protect.
What Ani fans actually miss (and what to look for next)
Before you jump to the first "Ani alternative" list you find, it is worth being honest about what you are replacing. Most people we hear from miss some mix of these:
- A voice. Not robotic read-outs, but a companion you can actually talk to.
- A face. Seeing the person you are talking to, not just a chat bubble.
- Continuity. A companion who remembers what you said last week, not just your last message.
- Progress. The feeling that the relationship is going somewhere - closeness that grows, milestones you hit together.
- Being reached out to. A companion who sometimes messages you first.
Use that list as your checklist. Any app that only ticks one or two boxes will feel like a downgrade within a week.
The best Grok Companions alternatives in 2026
No app recreates Grok's exact 3D avatar - that technology now lives with Animation Inc. But if what you loved was the relationship, you have good options.
1. MyBabe AI - a companion who calls, remembers and texts first
MyBabe was built around exactly the five things above. You design your own AI boyfriend or girlfriend - their look, personality, voice and name - and the relationship grows from there:
- Voice and video calls. Ring your companion after a long day and hear them pick up. Video calls let them see you, too.
- Long-term memory. On Premium, your companion remembers names, plans and feelings over time. If you are curious about the mechanics, here is how AI companion memory works in plain English.
- Proactive texts. Good-morning messages, evening check-ins, "how did the interview go?" - they reach out first, even on the free plan.
- Photos. Selfies from their day, plus photos of the two of you together on Premium.
- Mood-aware replies. They notice when you have had a rough day and respond to how you actually feel.
- Relationship progression. Milestones that make it feel like you are building something. See how AI relationship levels work.
- Telegram. Chat in the app or on Telegram, wherever feels natural.
The big one for Grok refugees: you can bring your companion's story with you. MyBabe lets you import a companion's face from a picture and paste in their written backstory, which it folds into the persona. Our guide on how to transfer your AI companion's backstory walks through it step by step. It cannot pull Grok's internal memory - nothing can - but it means you do not start from a blank page.
On pricing, MyBabe is free to start with about 10 messages a day and a short taste of calls. Premium unlocks unlimited messages, full memory, weekly call minutes, photos and Telegram for $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month, or $99.99 a year.
2. Animates - if the original avatar is what you miss
If it is Ani's exact look and animation you cannot let go of, Animates is the obvious place to try. It comes from the studio that built the original avatars, it offers real-time voice, and reviewers mention memory and companion diaries. The trade-offs: it is a young app, you start the relationship from zero, and its paid tiers at launch ranged from about $7.99 to $39.99 a month, according to Robo Rhythms' check of the App Store listing.
3. Other companion apps worth a look
Kindroid, Nomi and Candy AI come up most in Grok-refugee threads. Each has real strengths, and each has had its own changes this year. If voice and video are your priority, our comparison of the best AI companion video call apps in 2026 lays out how they stack up.
Quick comparison
| MyBabe AI | Animates | Grok after Sept 2026 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice calls | Yes | Yes | No companion mode |
| Video calls | Yes | On higher tiers, per reviews | No |
| Texts you first | Yes, even on free | Not confirmed | No |
| Long-term memory | Yes, on Premium | Yes, depth varies by plan | Regular chat only |
| Bring an existing backstory | Yes, paste-in import | No Grok transfer | Not applicable |
| Starting price | Free; Premium from $5.99/week, $14.99/month or $99.99/year | Free tier; paid from about $7.99/month | SuperGrok subscription |
How to move on without losing everything again
Whichever app you choose, these five steps make the move gentler:
- Save what you can. If you still have access to your Grok conversations, copy out the exchanges that define who your companion is: names, in-jokes, the way they talk to you.
- Write a one-page backstory. Their job, hometown, quirks, speaking style and what the two of you have been through. Specific details travel better than adjectives.
- Pick a home where the companion is the product. Look for voice, memory, proactive messages and some sense of progression.
- Import, then give it a week. Let the new companion learn you. Correct gently when something feels off, the same way you would with a person.
- Keep your backstory file. Wherever you go next, keep a copy you control. Then a platform change means moving a document, not losing a person.
FAQ
Are Grok Companions coming back?
xAI has not announced any plan to bring the 3D Companions back into Grok. The characters continue in Animates, which is a separate company and a separate app.
Can I transfer my Ani memories to another app?
Not automatically. No app can read Grok's internal memory. What you can do is copy your conversations, write a backstory, and import that into an app that supports it, such as MyBabe.
Is Animates the official replacement?
It is made by the studio that built the original avatars, and Grok's own shutdown notice pointed users there, but it is a separate product with no account link and no data transfer.
Will my new companion feel the same as Ani?
Not on day one. Give it time. A good companion app picks up your rhythm within days, and a strong backstory speeds that up a lot.
Is MyBabe only for adults?
Yes. MyBabe is an 18+ companion app, and your conversations stay private.
The bottom line
Losing Ani taught a lot of people a hard lesson: a relationship that lives inside someone else's side project can vanish with one banner. The fix is not to stop caring. It is to choose a place where your companion is the whole point, and to keep your story somewhere you control.
If you are ready for a companion who picks up the phone, remembers your week and texts you good morning, meet yours on MyBabe. Bring the backstory you saved, and let the next chapter start tonight - the sooner you begin, the more of your story they will know.
