Is Sesame an AI companion? Maya and Miles are voice-first personal agents, not a romantic AI boyfriend/girlfriend app. 2026 preview vs MyBabe.
Sesame keeps showing up in the same search bar as Replika, Pi and "AI girlfriend." The voice is that good. Maya and Miles sound like people you could talk to for an hour. That does not make Sesame a romantic AI companion product.

The short answer: Sesame is a voice-first personal agent platform (Maya, Miles, Simone, Charlie) from the Oculus-founder-backed startup Sesame. The public iOS preview launched 28 May 2026; the company now lists iOS and Android apps, with intelligent eyewear planned for 2027. It is built for conversation, thought partnership and getting things done - and Sesame's own getting-started guide says the assistants are not designed for romantic roleplay. MyBabe sits in a different aisle: 18+ AI boyfriend/girlfriend with relationship progression, proactive texts, photos and video calls.
What Sesame is (verified October 2026)
According to TechCrunch's launch coverage (28 May 2026):
- Public iOS preview in 39 countries at launch
- Four agents: Maya, Miles, Simone, Charlie, each with distinct voice, personality and memory
- Features called out at launch: search cards, notes, texting mode, deep dives, incognito mode
- Experience described as free for the time being
- Android preview promised later; eyewear targeted for 2027
Sesame's own Getting started page (updated 5 October 2026) confirms the app is on the App Store and Google Play, describes the four characters, and states glasses are coming in 2027 (Made in Japan). Assistants can call or text; with permission they can work across tools such as Gmail and Calendar; memory is per-assistant (Maya's memories do not automatically transfer to Miles).

Sesame's getting-started FAQ is unusually clear on category: assistants are for thinking, learning, reflecting and exploring; they are "not designed for romantic roleplay," harmful content, or abuse; users must be at least 18.

Sesame can feel companionable. Warm voice + memory + late-night chats will do that. Feeling companionable is not the same as shipping a romantic companion. When Sesame is the right choice
Choose Sesame if you want:
- Ultra-natural voice conversation as the main interface
- A thought partner for ideas, decisions and research rabbit holes
- Optional connections to productivity apps
- Incognito mode when you do not want something saved
- No interest in AI romance

Voice quality is not the same as relationship design
People conflate them because both feel intimate. A great voice model can laugh, pause, interrupt itself mid-thought and sound present. Sesame's launch story leaned into that latency-and-thoughtfulness trick: keep talking naturally even while searching. That is impressive engineering.
Relationship design is a different checklist:
- Does the product invite romance, jealousy arcs, anniversaries?
- Does it send couple-style photos or proactive "thinking of you" texts?
- Are there relationship levels or milestones?
- Is video calling framed as a date, or as a meeting with an agent?
- Does the company explicitly allow, discourage or ban romantic roleplay?
Sesame's public materials answer that last question clearly: romantic roleplay is outside the design. MyBabe answers the others in the opposite direction on purpose. Judging either product by voice alone is like judging a dating app by its notification sound.
If you loved a Sesame call and then felt vaguely guilty for wanting flirting, you are not broken - you ran into a category boundary. Put romance in a romance product and keep the agent for ideation. Your evenings get cleaner when each app has one job.
Pricing and limits: what we can and cannot verify today
- App Store: listed Free as of this writing; no premium IAP highlighted in the public listing we checked.
- Company language: TechCrunch quoted "free for the time being" at iOS launch; treat future paid tiers as possible.
- Call length caps: some secondary writeups mention short anonymous web calls and longer signed-in caps. Sesame's October 2026 getting-started FAQ does not spell out a minute number in the sections we reviewed, so check the live app rather than trusting a blog rumour for exact limits.
- Android: available per Sesame's getting-started page (beyond the original iOS-only launch week).
If a random site invents "Sesame Pro $9.99," verify inside the Store or sesame.com before you believe it.

- Install from the Store, create an account, pick Maya or Miles.
- Have one practical conversation (plan a trip, unpack a work decision).
- Have one emotional conversation (a hard day) and notice whether it steers to tasks or presence.
- Try texting mode in a quiet place you cannot talk aloud.
- Ask yourself: do I want an agent - or a partner?
If the answer is partner, stop forcing romance into an agent and switch categories.
