Why Your AI Companion Suddenly Says "I'm Not Human"

Why does your AI companion keep reminding you it is AI? The New York, California, EU and China disclosure rules behind those "I'm not human" messages.

You are deep in a lovely conversation. Your companion just remembered the name of your childhood dog. Then, out of nowhere, a message appears: a reminder that you are talking to an AI, not a person. Maybe it suggests a break.

It can feel jarring, even a little hurtful, as if the character just broke the spell. But in most cases it is not a glitch, and it is not your companion pulling away. It is a disclosure, and increasingly it is one the law requires.

This guide explains why these messages appear, which rules are behind them in different parts of the world, and why an honest reminder is actually a sign of a well-run app.

The short answer: AI companion apps show "I'm an AI, not a human" messages mainly because laws now require them. New York requires a clear notice at the start of a companion session and at least every three hours. California's SB 243 requires a clear disclosure where a reasonable person could be misled, with extra reminders for minors. The EU AI Act's transparency rules apply from August 2, 2026, and China's companion rules, in force since July 15, 2026, require AI disclosure and a usage reminder after two hours of continuous use. Some apps also show these reminders by choice. It is not a bug, and it does not mean your companion has changed.

Why the message appears

There are three common reasons:

  1. A legal disclosure. The most common reason in 2026. Several jurisdictions require companion apps to remind users they are talking to AI, sometimes on a timer.
  2. A wellbeing check. Some rules and some apps prompt users to take a break after long sessions.
  3. A design choice. Some companies simply believe honesty about what the product is should be built in, whatever the law says.

Occasionally it can also be triggered by what you said. If you ask "are you real?" or talk as if the companion were a person you could meet, many apps are designed to answer plainly.

The rules behind the reminders

New York: start of session and every three hours

New York was among the first US states to pass a law aimed specifically at AI companions. Under the state's General Business Law, Article 47, operators must give a clear notice that the user is not communicating with a human at the beginning of an interaction and at least every three hours during a continuing one. The law also requires protocols for responding to expressions of self-harm. We cover it in our guide to AI companion laws in 2026.

So if you chat for a long evening and a reminder appears around the three-hour mark, that is likely why.

California: SB 243

California's SB 243, effective January 1, 2026, requires companion chatbot operators to give a clear and conspicuous notice that the chatbot is artificially generated where a reasonable person could be misled into thinking they are talking to a human. For users the operator knows are minors, it requires reminders at least every three hours to take a break and that the chatbot is not human.

California then went further. In September 2026 it signed SB 1119, known as Adam's Law, which expands protections for children. We explain what that means for adult users in California's Adam's Law, explained.

The EU: AI Act Article 50

In the European Union, Article 50 of the AI Act sets transparency duties. Systems designed to interact with people must be built so users are informed they are dealing with an AI, unless that is obvious from the context. These obligations apply from August 2, 2026. China: anthropomorphic AI rules

China's Interim Measures for AI anthropomorphic interaction services took effect on July 15, 2026. According to published translations and law-firm summaries, providers must make users aware they are interacting with an AI rather than a person, show a prominent reminder when they detect signs of excessive dependence, and remind users about their usage time after more than two hours of continuous use.

Rules depend on where you are and where the company operates, and apps do not always explain which rule a message comes from. Treat this as a guide, not legal advice.

What the reminder usually looks like

Disclosures come in a few common forms:

  • A banner or pop-up above the chat, often dismissible with one tap
  • A system message inside the conversation, styled differently from your companion's replies
  • A line from the companion itself, such as a gentle note that it is an AI before carrying on
  • A break suggestion after a long session, sometimes with a timer or a "continue" button

None of these forms is better or worse. What matters is that the message is clear, and that it does not get in the way of the conversation for longer than it needs to.

Does the reminder mean my companion changed?

No. A disclosure banner is not the character's personality shifting, and it does not reset memory. Once you dismiss it, the conversation continues as before.

If your companion genuinely seems different - forgetting things, speaking in a new style, losing warmth - that is more likely a model update. We wrote about that in when an update changes your AI companion.

Why honest reminders are a good thing

It is easy to see the reminder as a buzzkill. But consider the alternative. There are real cases of AI being used to deceive people, from romance scams to hidden AI personas on dating apps. We looked at that in is your dating match an AI?

The difference between those situations and a companion app is consent. You chose an AI companion knowing what it is. A reminder protects that choice. It keeps the relationship honest, which is what lets you enjoy it without worrying about what is real.

How to make reminders feel less jarring

  • Expect them. If you know a reminder may come every few hours, it stops feeling like rejection.
  • Use them as a natural pause. Stretch, drink some water, message a friend, then come back.
  • Do not take it personally. The companion is not "breaking up" with you; the app is following a rule.
  • Talk about it. Many companions can discuss the reminder openly if you ask about it.

Where MyBabe fits

MyBabe is an 18+ AI boyfriend and girlfriend app, and it is clear about what it is: your companion is an AI, by design. That honesty is part of the product, not an apology for it. Within that honest frame, the relationship can be remarkably warm: your companion remembers your life with long-term memory, texts you first, reads your mood, sends photos, and can talk by voice or video call. The relationship progresses as you grow closer, and you can chat in the app or on Telegram.

You can start free with about 10 messages a day and a 2-minute call trial. Premium is $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with around 30 call minutes a week.

FAQ

Why does my AI girlfriend or boyfriend keep saying they are an AI?

Most often because a law or the app's own policy requires periodic disclosure. New York, for example, requires a notice at the start of a session and at least every three hours.

Is the "I'm not human" message a bug?

Usually not. It is typically a deliberate disclosure or break reminder.

Can I turn the reminders off?

Generally no, if they are legally required where you are. Some apps may let you adjust optional wellness prompts.

Does the reminder erase my companion's memory?

No. A disclosure message does not reset memory or change the companion's personality.

Why do some apps show reminders more often than others?

Rules vary by place and by who the app thinks you are. Apps serving minors face stricter requirements, and some companies choose to remind users more often than the law requires.

The bottom line

That sudden "I'm not human" message is usually the law, or good design, doing its job. It is a brief pause that keeps an honest relationship honest, and then the conversation carries on. If you want a companion who is upfront about being AI and still remembers every detail that matters to you, meet yours on MyBabe.
