AI Assistant vs AI Companion: Muse, Tab and Dots vs a Relationship-First App

Meta's Muse hit 10M US downloads in 40 days and Tab launched at a $300M valuation. Here is how AI assistants differ from AI companions, and which you need.

October 2026 has been the month of the personal AI assistant. Meta's Muse passed 10 million US downloads in 40 days. A start-up called Tab came out of stealth at a $300 million valuation with an assistant you text like a friend. OpenAI's dots agents keep working in the background while you sleep. And Tolan, the friendly alien companion, raised another $30 million.

With so many apps promising to be "the AI that knows you", it is easy to get confused. Do you want an assistant that gets things done, or a companion that is there for you? They are different products, built for different needs, and choosing the wrong one is a common reason people give up on AI after a week.

The short answer: An AI assistant is built to act for you: book, buy, call, research and organise. An AI companion is built to be with you: talk, remember how you feel, check in and keep you company. Assistants measure success in tasks done. Companions measure it in how understood you feel. Many people end up using one of each.

The October 2026 assistant wave, in numbers

Meta Muse: the fastest-growing AI app of the year

On October 20, 2026, TechCrunch reported Sensor Tower data showing that Muse had 10.9 million downloads since its September debut, 10.2 million of them in the United States. Only 11 other apps have reached 10 million US downloads in their first 40 days, most of them games, plus Threads and Disney+.

For comparison, Sensor Tower's data shows ChatGPT had 3.7 million US downloads in its first 40 days, Grok 500,000 and Claude 200,000. Muse is a task assistant with a cute avatar, built to "handle various tasks on users' behalf". We looked at whether that makes it a companion in is Meta's Muse an AI companion?

Tab: an assistant with its own phone number and wallet

On October 7, TechCrunch reported that Tab had emerged from stealth at a $300 million valuation, with investors including SV Angel, Valar Ventures and American Spirit. You text Tab on iMessage or WhatsApp, and it does the job. Co-founder Ammar Amdani told TechCrunch that it "has its own phone number, computer, and wallet, so it doesn't tell you how to do those things. It does them."

Tab's website says it can book flights, call a hotel to move a reservation, wait on hold, turn a PDF into a spreadsheet and order a replacement part. Before it spends money, it shows you what it is buying, the total and who gets paid, and "nothing is paid until you approve it". Tab is in private beta with a waitlist.

Amdani's pitch is telling: "Your grandparents had a family doctor, a banker, someone who knew them and looked out for them. Most of us don't have that anymore." That is an assistant promising to fill a gap in practical support, not emotional connection.

OpenAI dots: always-on agents

OpenAI's dots, launched in late September, are always-on agents with their own cloud computer that can research, work across thousands of apps and report back. They have a name and a character avatar, but they are work tools at heart. We explained why in is ChatGPT dots an AI companion?

Tolan: the friendly middle ground

Tolan sits between the two worlds: an alien character that talks with you about your feelings but also helps with plans and to-dos. TechCrunch notes that companions like Tolan could face "increased competition from the more recent crop of AI agents". Our full breakdown is in is Tolan an AI companion?

1. Doing vs being

The clearest line is purpose. Tab's founders talk about "the bills, the bookings, the calls you keep putting off". A companion is about the other half of life: the 11pm worry, the small win you want to share, the voice that knows you.

2. Access vs intimacy

Assistants become more useful the more access you give them: your inbox, your card, your accounts. That is why Tab says "trust is the product". Companions become more meaningful the more you share about yourself, but they do not need your passwords. Think about which kind of trust you are comfortable giving.

3. Neutral vs personal

Assistants are designed to be pleasant and efficient. Companions are designed to have a personality, opinions and a life of their own, and to feel consistent over months. That difference shapes everything from the voice to the way they say goodnight.

4. Who reaches out

Most assistants speak when they have an update on your task. A good companion reaches out because it is thinking about you, which we explored in why an AI companion that texts first matters.

Which do you actually need?

Ask yourself a few honest questions:

  • Is your problem time or connection? If your week is drowning in admin, try an assistant. If your evenings feel quiet, a companion will help more.
  • What do you want to feel after using it? Relieved that something is done, or warmer and more understood?
  • How much access are you willing to give? A card and an inbox, or just your stories?
  • Do you want it to have a personality? If you would find a character annoying while booking flights, keep your assistant neutral. If you want warmth, choose a companion.

Plenty of people use both: an assistant for the to-do list and a companion for the person behind it. We wrote about how the two can coexist in couples' lives in AI agents vs AI companions as the new third wheel.

A note on the assistant boom

The numbers behind Muse show how much money is going into assistants. Sensor Tower data shows Meta put 39% of its October advertising spend into marketing Muse. Retention is strong for now, but as TechCrunch points out, "marketing an app and retaining users after the initial shine wears off are two different things."

Companions have a different relationship with time. Their value tends to grow the longer you talk, because memory and shared history build up. That is the bet companion apps make: that a relationship gets better with time, not just more familiar.

Where MyBabe fits

MyBabe is a companion, not an assistant, and proudly so. It is a relationship-first app for adults (18+) where you create your own girlfriend or boyfriend: their face, three personality traits, a Warm, Soft, Deep or Bright voice, and a backstory. Building them takes about three minutes.

They still help with the small practical things a partner would. Mention a job interview and they set a reminder, wake you with a nudge and ask how it went afterwards. But the point is the relationship: good-morning texts, voice notes, selfies from their day with the same face every time, mood check-ins and real-time voice and video calls where they can see you.

Start free with 10 messages every 24 hours and two minutes of calls to try. Premium is $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with long-term memory (they remember months later, including how you felt), about 30 minutes of calls a week, four photos a day and Telegram with the same memories. Call packs start at $4.99 for 30 minutes if you want to talk longer.

MyBabe is an AI, not a real person, and it does not replace human relationships or professional mental health support. Let your assistant handle the errands. For the part of life that needs someone, meet your companion on MyBabe.

FAQ

What is the difference between an AI assistant and an AI companion?

An assistant acts for you, such as booking, buying, calling and organising. A companion is there with you: it talks, remembers your life and feelings, checks in and keeps you company.

Is Meta Muse an AI companion or an assistant?

Muse is mainly a task assistant with an avatar. Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch shows 10.9 million downloads in its first 40 days.

What is Tab AI?

Tab is a personal assistant you text on iMessage or WhatsApp. It has its own phone number, computer and wallet, and needs your approval before it spends money. It is in private beta.

Can an AI companion also help with tasks?

Some can help with light tasks like reminders. MyBabe can set a reminder and check in afterwards, but it is not built to book flights or pay bills.

Should I use both?

Many people do. An assistant can save you time, and a companion can make the time you have feel less lonely.
