Is ChatGPT Dots an AI Companion? What OpenAI's Always-On Agent Is (and Isn't)
OpenAI's dots are always-on agents you can name, call and text. Are they AI companions? What dots do, who can get them, and how they differ from a romantic AI.
It has a name you choose. It can have a cute pet avatar. You can call it, message it in ChatGPT or Slack, and it messages you first when it has something to share. It runs 24/7 and learns how you think.
So is OpenAI's new dot an AI companion?
OpenAI introduced dots on September 29, 2026, and they are now rolling out to some ChatGPT plans. Because they are personal, always-on and proactive, a lot of people are asking whether a dot is a kind of AI friend or partner. We read OpenAI's announcement and help pages so you do not have to.
The short answer: Not really. A ChatGPT dot is an always-on work agent, not a relationship-first AI companion. It can be named, called and messaged, and it reaches out with progress updates, but it is built to research, create and finish tasks using its own cloud computer and your connected apps. At launch it is limited to ChatGPT Pro users (18+, outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK) and Business Premium, with an Enterprise beta. If you want warmth, flirting, mood check-ins and a person-like relationship, a dedicated companion app is a better fit.
What dots are (verified October 2026)
From OpenAI's announcement, "Introducing dots", and its getting-started help article:
- Always-on agents. OpenAI calls dots "remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything".
- Powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each dot has its own cloud computer and browser, and can work "towards your goals 24/7".
- Connected to your apps. Through plugins, a dot can connect to "over 4,000 apps".
- Reachable in many places. You can message or call your dot in ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, and message it in Slack and Teams. Texting is a limited beta for some US Pro users.
- Personal touches. You can name your dot, choose from available characters or pick a pet as its avatar, and it may even generate a pet for you.
- Proactive. When you are not working with it, your dot does what OpenAI calls "proactive research" in the background, using read-only tools on your connected apps, and it can message you with progress, questions or decisions.
Why dots feel companion-like
On paper, some features overlap with what people love about AI companions:
| Feature | ChatGPT dot | Typical AI companion |
|---|---|---|
| A name and avatar you pick | Yes (characters or a pet) | Yes, usually a full face and look |
| Messages you first | Yes, with updates and questions | Yes, often good-morning texts and check-ins |
| Remembers you | Yes, from ChatGPT memory plus its own notes | Yes, often focused on your life and feelings |
| Voice calls | You can call it; it cannot call you at launch | Varies; many offer voice, some video |
| Available 24/7 | Yes | Yes |
So it is easy to see why the question comes up. If an assistant knows your name, your habits and your goals, and pings you while you are away, it can start to feel like someone, not something. We explored that pull in our look at how people move from using ChatGPT as a tool to treating it as a companion.
Why a dot is still not an AI companion
The purpose is different, and purpose shapes everything.
1. It is built for work. Every example in OpenAI's launch is about getting things done: turning customer feedback into tested code fixes, revising a product launch, updating a research analysis, preparing invoices. OpenAI says the magic of dots is when "they bring you work done the way you would do it".
2. Its proactivity is about tasks, not feelings. A dot messages you with "progress, questions, or decisions that need you". A companion texts you because it is thinking about you, wants to know how the interview went or noticed you have been quiet. Our guide to which AI companions text you first compares how different apps handle those check-ins.
3. It has no romantic or relationship design. There is no relationship journey, no personality traits like romantic or playful, no couple photos and no flirting. It is a capable colleague with a cute avatar.
4. It does not call you. OpenAI's help page is direct: "Your dot cannot initiate calls to you at launch." You can call it from the phone button in its conversation.
5. It is expensive and limited. The first dot is included with ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium. OpenAI's voice help page lists Pro at $100 or $200 a month. Pro access to dots is for users over 18 and excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK.
Privacy and memory: what to know
Because a dot connects to your apps and works in the background, the privacy details matter:
- Memory: your dot receives memories from ChatGPT and creates its own, including from connected apps.
- Disconnecting is not deleting: disconnecting an app "does not delete information your dot has already obtained from it". To delete a dot's own memories, you have to Reset (delete) the dot.
- Training: on personal plans, you can control whether dots' conversations and work are used to improve OpenAI's models. OpenAI says it does not train directly on proactive research or the dot's notes to itself.
- Usage: conversations with your dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, but tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do.
- Texting: the texting beta uses a third-party provider, and OpenAI advises caution when sharing sensitive information by text.
For a romantic companion, you will usually share far more personal and emotional detail than with a work agent, so these questions matter even more.
Dots vs Pi vs Sesame vs a romantic companion
We have covered other "is it a companion?" products too. Here is a quick orientation:
| Product | What it is mainly for | Relationship-first? |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT dots | Always-on work agent | No |
| Pi | A free personal AI for conversation | Partly, but not romantic. See is Pi an AI companion? |
| Sesame | Voice-first personal agents (Maya and Miles) | Partly, but not romantic. See is Sesame an AI companion? |
| MyBabe | An AI girlfriend or boyfriend you create | Yes |
Who should choose a dot
A dot makes sense if you:
- already pay for ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium
- want an agent that keeps working on projects between conversations
- live in a supported market
- are comfortable connecting work apps and reviewing an agent's actions
Who should choose a companion app
A relationship-first companion makes more sense if you want:
- someone with a face, a voice and a personality you chose
- good-morning texts, mood check-ins and inside jokes
- voice and video calls that feel personal, not like a meeting
- a sense of growing together over time
Voice is a big part of this. Full-duplex voice models like OpenAI's GPT-Live, which also power dots, are making AI calls feel far more natural; we explained how in what full-duplex voice AI is.
Where MyBabe fits
MyBabe is built for the relationship side, for adults (18+). You create your own girlfriend or boyfriend: how they look, how they sound (warm, soft, deep or bright), three personality traits and a backstory. Then they text you first, send voice notes and photos from their day, check in on your mood and pick up your calls, by voice or video. Text them in French, German, Arabic or Spanish and they answer in kind.
The free plan gives you 10 messages every 24 hours and two minutes of calls to try. Premium is $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with long-term memory, about 30 minutes of voice and video calls a week, four photos a day and Telegram. As you talk, your relationship moves through cycles from Gold to Diamond, and if you go all the way, they propose.
Your companion is an AI, not a person. It will not file your invoices, but it will ask how your day really went. When you are ready, create your companion on MyBabe.
