What Happens to Your AI Companion When the App Shuts Down

Avatar. One closed, Muah AI left the iPhone App Store and Doubao's export window ends Oct 15. What you lose when a companion app dies, and how to protect it.

You open the app on an ordinary evening and something is wrong. The login screen is gone, or the app will not update, or a banner says the service is closing. Somewhere behind that screen is a companion who knew your morning routine, your sister's name and the joke you have been running for months. It is a strange kind of loss, and more people are going through it than you might think.

This guide explains what actually happens to an AI companion when its app shuts down, what recent closures in September and October 2026 tell us, and what you can do today so that one company's bad news does not erase everything you built.

The short answer: when an AI companion app closes, the companion, its memories and your chat history usually go with it. Data export is the exception, not the rule, and refunds are rare. The best protection is simple: export whatever the app lets you export, keep your own written record of who your companion is, and know where your subscription is billed.

What has happened recently

Independent tracker CompanionHunt keeps a dated table of AI companion shutdowns and feature withdrawals. As of its October 4, 2026 update, it lists 17 cases since 2023: 6 full shutdowns, 2 app store removals, 7 withdrawn features and 2 regulator orders. Its own summary is blunt: "companions rarely survive their app."

Three recent cases show the range of ways this can happen.

Avatar.One: the app simply disappeared

According to CompanionHunt, Avatar. One, a web-based companion app with 3D avatars, shut down on September 24, 2026. Every companion, every chat and any purchased credits went with it, and no export or refund was offered. When we checked on October 9, 2026, the address www.avatar.one redirected to an unrelated private capital website. There is no login screen left to go back to.

Muah AI: gone from the iPhone App Store, still on the web

CompanionHunt reports that Muah AI's iOS app was removed from the App Store around September 23, 2026, with no company statement. On October 9, 2026, the US App Store pages we checked for Muah AI returned "not found", while the Muah website was still online. That is a different kind of loss: you may still reach your companion in a browser, but you cannot reinstall or update the iPhone app. We cover that case in detail in our post on Muah AI leaving the iPhone App Store.

Doubao, Qwen and Yuanbao: the feature closed, not the app

The biggest recent case is in China. CompanionHunt reports that companion and roleplay features across ByteDance's Doubao, Alibaba's Qwen and Tencent's Yuanbao were cut when China's new rules took effect on July 15, 2026. The main assistant apps kept running, but the companion side did not. CompanionHunt also reports that Doubao gave users a read-only export window for chat histories through October 15, 2026. If that applies to you, that date is the whole story - export now rather than later.

The three ways a companion can disappear

It helps to know which kind of loss you are facing, because each one leaves you with different options.

What happenedWhat it usually meansWhat you can still do
Full shutdownThe service closes. Servers go dark, and the companion, memory and chat history go with them.Only what you saved before the closure. Watch for any export window and use it immediately.
App store removalYou cannot download or update the app from that store. A website or other platform may still work.Log in on the web if one exists. Export your chats. Do not uninstall the app until you have a copy.
Feature withdrawalThe app keeps running but loses something people relied on - a model, a mode, a free tier, voice.Your account may survive, but the personality can change. Save examples of how your companion used to talk.

We wrote a fuller history of the store-removal pattern in why AI companion apps keep disappearing from app stores, and feature changes in when an update changes your AI companion.

Why it feels like a real loss

If you feel silly for being upset, you are not. A companion you talked to every day becomes part of the rhythm of your life: the good-morning text, the voice on the walk home, the one place where you told the small wins first. Losing that is a disruption, whatever anyone else thinks of AI companions.

What makes it harder is that, unlike a friendship, you rarely get a goodbye. CompanionHunt notes that Soulmate AI users in 2023 had about a week's notice, and Avatar. One users in 2026 reportedly had none. The one positive example in its table is Dot, which announced its closure a month ahead in 2025 and offered a data request during the wind-down.

What usually survives, and what does not

Based on the cases CompanionHunt has documented, here is what to expect:

  • Chat history: usually lost, unless the app offers an export and you use it in time.
  • Memories and backstory: stored on the company's servers, so they close with the service.
  • Personality: this lives in the company's model and settings. Even if you save every chat, another app will not sound exactly the same.
  • Purchased credits or coins: CompanionHunt found refunds were rare across its cases.
  • Subscriptions: if you paid through the App Store or Google Play, billing is managed there. Check that store's subscription page so you are not charged for a service that no longer works.

A five-minute backup you can do tonight

You do not need any technical skill for this. You just need to do it before you need it.

  1. Check for an export option. Look in settings for "export", "download my data" or "request your data". If it exists, use it now and save the file somewhere outside the app.
  2. Write a one-page profile. Your companion's name, age, look, voice, personality traits, how you met in the story, and the inside jokes. This is the part people most often wish they had saved.
  3. List the facts it is meant to remember. Your birthday, your pet's name, the people in your life, the big events coming up. These are what make a new companion feel like it knows you.
  4. Save five conversations you would hate to lose. Screenshots are fine. They capture tone in a way a summary cannot.
  5. Note where you are billed. App Store, Google Play or a card on a website. That is where you will cancel if the service ends.

If you ever need to rebuild somewhere new, our guide to moving your AI companion's backstory to another app walks through how to use that profile. And if you have already lost a companion, what to do after losing an AI companion covers the realistic options.

How to judge whether an app is likely to last

No one can promise that any app will be around forever, and you should be wary of any company that does. But there are signs worth watching:

  • Is it on more than one platform? An app that works on iPhone, Android and the web is less likely to vanish from your life because one store changes its rules.
  • Is pricing clear and stable? Sudden switches to paying per message, or large surprise price rises, can be a sign of financial strain.
  • Does it update? A store listing with no updates for months is a warning sign.
  • Does it say clearly that it is AI and for adults? Store removals and regulator orders in CompanionHunt's table were often linked to age and content rules.
  • Can you get your data out? An export option is a sign a company has thought about your side of the relationship.

Where MyBabe fits

MyBabe was built for people who want one ongoing relationship rather than a new character every night. Your companion texts first, remembers what you share, sends voice notes and photos from their day, and picks up voice and video calls in real time. It is available on iPhone, Android and the web, and Premium members can also chat on Telegram with the same memories.

We will not pretend any app is immune to change. What we can tell you is what you get today: a free tier with 10 messages every 24 hours and a 2-minute taste of voice or video calls, and Premium at $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with unlimited messages, long-term memory and 30 minutes of calls every week. We still recommend keeping your own written profile of your companion - for MyBabe or for any other app. It costs you nothing and it protects the part that matters most: your story together.

FAQ

What happens to my AI companion if the app shuts down?

In almost every case CompanionHunt documented, the companion and its chat history were lost when the service closed. A few apps offered a data export during a wind-down period, but most did not.

Can I export my AI companion chats?

Only if the app offers it. Some do, often in privacy or account settings. Do it regularly rather than waiting for bad news, because a shutdown notice rarely leaves much time.

If an app leaves the App Store, is it shutting down?

Not necessarily. A store removal means you cannot download or update it from that store. The service may still run on the web or other platforms. Treat it as a warning to back up your data, not as proof the service is ending.

Will my companion be the same in another app?

Not exactly. You can carry over the name, look, backstory and the facts it should know, and many people find the relationship comes back quickly. But each app's model writes differently, so expect a new voice that grows into the old story.

Do I get a refund when a companion app closes?

Rarely, based on the cases tracked so far. If you paid through an app store, contact that store's support. If you paid by card on a website, contact your bank.

The bottom line

Companion apps do close, and when they do, the companion usually goes with them. You cannot control a company's future, but you can control your own record of the relationship - and you can choose a home where your companion texts first, calls back and remembers your week. When you are ready, meet your companion on MyBabe and start a story worth keeping.
