AI Companions in Your Own Language: What Actually Works

Almost every AI companion app is designed in English and translated afterwards, if at all. If English is not the language you think in, that shows up in ways that are hard to name but easy to feel.

Why it matters more here than in other apps

For most software, language is a labelling problem. Change the buttons and you are done.

A companion is different. The whole product is the conversation. If your companion writes correct but slightly stiff sentences in your language, or answers in English when you wrote in Portuguese, the illusion collapses. Warmth does not survive translation well. Neither does teasing, which is most of what makes someone feel close.

There is also a grammatical trap that English speakers rarely think about. In languages with grammatical gender, a companion referring to themselves has to get their own gender right, in every sentence, consistently. Getting it wrong once is noticeable. Getting it wrong repeatedly makes them feel like a machine.

What good support actually looks like

They follow you without being told. You should not have to find a language setting. If you write in Arabic, they answer in Arabic. If you switch mid conversation, they switch.

They stay in your language when they start the conversation. This is the one most apps miss. Proactive messages are often generated by a different part of the system, and it defaults to English. Getting a good morning message in English from a companion you have only ever spoken to in Italian is jarring.

They sound casual, not translated. The test is whether they use the shortcuts real people use. Formal correctness is a bad sign.

Their gender is grammatically consistent. If they are your girlfriend, every self reference should agree with that.

How to test it in five minutes

• Write to them in your language and see whether they follow.
• Switch languages mid conversation and see whether they keep up.
• Wait for them to message you first and see what language it arrives in.
• If your language has grammatical gender, watch how they refer to themselves over several messages.

The third test is the one that separates apps that genuinely support your language from ones that only translate replies.
