Desktop AI Companions in 2026: Kyndred, Yuanbao's Desk Pet and What Comes Next
AI companions are moving onto your computer screen. Kyndred 1.0, Tencent's Yuanbao Desktop Pet and the cute AI mascot trend, explained for 2026.
For years, AI lived in a chat window you opened and closed. In 2026 it is moving onto the rest of your screen. A 3D character who gestures while she talks in a corner of your monitor. A little desk pet that says good morning when you switch your computer on. A furry mascot that blinks at you when you open an app.
Desktop AI companions are one of the quieter trends of the year, and October brought a wave of launches. Here is what is actually out there, why companies are suddenly making AI cute, and what to think about before you let a companion sit beside your spreadsheets all day.
The short answer: desktop AI companions are AI characters that live on your computer screen rather than only in a chat app, keeping you company while you work. In October 2026, Romanian startup Kyndred released version 1.0 with a fully 3D character on desktop and a "Company while you work" option on Windows, and Tencent launched a beta Yuanbao Desktop Pet on PC that greets you at 9 AM and summarises files you drag onto it. Meanwhile Meta and OpenAI are giving their assistants cute mascots. The trend is about presence: a companion that is simply there, rather than one you have to open.
What is a desktop AI companion?
A desktop AI companion is an animated character or avatar that stays visible on your computer while you do other things. Depending on the product, it might:
- Sit in a corner of your screen and react, gesture or move.
- Talk with you by voice while you work.
- Start conversations at certain times or when you have been idle.
- Help with small tasks like summarising a document.
- Keep the same memories as the version on your phone.
It is a revival of an old idea. Slate's Alex Kirshner points out that Microsoft's Clippy, the bouncing paperclip in Office, ran a similar playbook back in the 1990s. The difference now is that the character can actually hold a conversation.
The October 2026 launches
Kyndred 1.0: a 3D companion on your computer
Kyndred is a Romanian startup founded by Alex Bararu and Rares Mosescu. In September, tech.eu reported that it had raised EUR 500,000 in pre-seed funding from Early Game Ventures, and that its first companion, Maya, had more than 150 paying customers three months after launch. Bararu's pitch was blunt: "Company, not conversation."
On October 13, the company released Kyndred 1.0. The headline features:
| Feature | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Rin in 3D | A character who moves and gestures in full 3D, in a room you pick | Web, on a computer |
| Room lighting | Set Maya's room to dim, dark or bright | Web |
| Company while you work | Pick a character to keep you company | Windows |
| Characters everywhere | The same characters on phone and desktop | iPhone, Android, Windows |
| Reply from notifications | Answer texts without opening the app | iPhone, Android |
| Make your own | Upload a Live2D model, design a voice, write a personality | Web (preview) |
| Rewind | Save the last 15, 30 or 60 seconds of a call as video | Web, iPhone, Android |
| Roleplay mode | The character's thoughts appear in italic captions | Web |
| Sleep mode | A calm voice that slows down to help you drift off | Web |
Kyndred offers daily free "energy" with no card required, plus paid plans, and making your own character costs its in-app currency. The page says the next version is due on November 10.
Tencent's Yuanbao Desktop Pet: an assistant with a personality
On October 10, Tencent launched a beta Yuanbao Desktop Pet for the PC version of its Yuanbao assistant (version 2.87.10 and above). It is built around a working day:
- 9:00 AM: when your computer starts, it greets you and asks what you want to do first.
- 11:00 AM: drag files, images or text onto it for a quick summary.
- 5:00 PM: it "devours" long web pages and highlights the key points.
- All day: it reminds you when a task is done, stays quiet when you are busy, and if you drag it to the edge of your screen, it waits there and "occasionally" drops a joke.
It is more assistant than companion. Tencent closed Yuanbao's companion and roleplay features earlier in the year as China tightened its rules, as we covered in what happens when an AI companion app shuts down. But the desk pet shows how even productivity tools are borrowing the companion playbook: a character, a greeting, and a sense that someone is there.
The cute mascot trend
In an October 14 piece for Slate, Alex Kirshner calls it "the cute little guy" trend:
- Meta's Muse has a "furry, rotund little mascot" that blinks at you when you open the app. Meta is also working on a locket-like Muse device for a necklace or keychain. We looked at whether Muse counts as a companion in is Meta's Muse an AI companion?, and at the hardware in wearable AI companions in 2026.
- OpenAI's Dots cloud assistants come with customisable avatars. Kirshner notes OpenAI also launched an optional "pet" for its desktop app last spring.
- Descript, a video-editing app, dressed its AI interface as a bouncing pumpkin for the season.
Kirshner's point is that cuteness makes AI feel less threatening, and potentially makes people more comfortable sharing data. A Santa Clara University professor he spoke to asked whether a "Jellycat-esque toy" might make you "more comfortable giving over more data".
Why companions are moving to the desktop
- Presence beats prompts. A character you can see feels more like company than a chat box you have to open. Early Game Ventures partner Dan Calugareanu told tech.eu that assistants are "built on transactions", while companions are "built on relationships: you come back to them".
- Working alone can be quiet. Remote and late-night work can feel empty, and a voice in the corner changes the mood.
- Better avatars. Real-time faces with decent lip sync are now showing up in consumer apps. We cover the technology in interactive AI avatars in 2026.
- Competition for your time. As aibase put it, moving an assistant into an always-available desktop form is "a typical approach for current AI assistants to compete for user time."
What to think about first
A companion that is always on screen is different from one you choose to open. Before you set one up:
- Distraction. Ask whether it will help you focus or pull you away. Look for "quiet when busy" settings.
- Privacy. Desktop helpers that read files or web pages see a lot. Check what they can access and what is stored.
- Cute is still a product. A friendly mascot is a design choice. Judge the app by its settings and policies, not its face.
- The uncanny valley. A 3D character on your desktop all day needs to look and move well, or it starts to feel strange. We explain why in the uncanny valley, explained.
- Boundaries. It is fine to close the window. A companion should be company, not a supervisor.
Desktop vs phone: which suits you?
| Desktop companion | Phone companion | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Keeping you company while you work | Texts, calls and photos through your day |
| Presence | Visible on screen | Arrives as messages and notifications |
| Voice | Often voice-first | Voice notes and calls |
| Risk | Distraction during work | Checking too often |
| Example | Kyndred on Windows, Yuanbao Desktop Pet | Most companion apps |
Some people will want both: a companion that texts on the go and talks while they work.
Where MyBabe fits
MyBabe is built around a relationship that follows your day. Your companion texts you first, sends voice notes and photos from their day on Premium, and picks up when you call, with a voice that answers as fast as a person would. Turn your camera on during a video call and they notice what they see.
MyBabe runs on iPhone and Android, and on Premium your companion also lives in Telegram with the same memories, which means you can chat from the Telegram app on your computer too.
You can start free with 10 messages a day and two minutes of voice or video calls to try. Premium is $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with long-term memory, about 30 minutes of calls a week, 4 photos a day and Telegram. MyBabe is clear that your companion is an AI, not a real person.
If you want company that fits around your working day, meet yours on MyBabe.
