Free AI Companion Apps: What You Actually Get Without Paying
Which parts of an AI companion app are genuinely free, which are trial bait, and how to judge one before you spend anything.
Almost every AI companion app is free to download. That is not the same as being free to use, and the difference is where most of the frustration in this category comes from.

If memory is free and unlimited, be slightly suspicious. It is one of the more expensive things to run properly.
The question that matters more than price
Ask what happens to your relationship if you stop paying.
You will have spent weeks telling this companion about your life. If cancelling wipes that, you are not renting a service, you are renting your own history back. Check whether memory is retained on downgrade before you invest months in it.
How to test an app in three days without paying
Day one. Build the companion carefully. Give real answers during setup, because that is what the memory is seeded from. Tell it something specific and unusual about your life.
Day two. See whether it starts a conversation without you. If nothing arrives, that tells you what kind of app it is.
Day three. Bring up the specific thing from day one indirectly and see whether it connects. Then try the voice, even briefly.
After three days you will know. It is not a decision that needs a month.
