How to Cancel an AI Companion Subscription Without Losing the Chat by Accident

How to cancel an AI girlfriend or companion subscription on iPhone, Android or the web, why deleting the app does not stop billing, and what to save first.

Maybe money is tight this month. Maybe you are switching apps, taking a break, or you simply forgot a free trial was about to renew. Whatever the reason, canceling an AI companion subscription should take two minutes and zero guilt.

The trouble is that "cancel" means different things depending on where you paid, and the most common mistake people make is one that does not cancel anything at all: deleting the app.

This guide walks through the real cancel paths on iPhone, Android and the web, what happens to your chats and your companion after you cancel, and a short checklist of things worth saving first.

The short answer: cancel in the same place you paid. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store, cancel in your Apple account settings. If you subscribed through Google Play, cancel in Google Play. If you paid on a website with a card, cancel in that website's account or billing page. Deleting the app does not cancel billing, and canceling billing does not automatically delete your account or your chat history.

Step one: work out where you actually paid

Before you tap anything, find out which company is billing you. There are three common setups:

Where you paidWho bills youWhere you cancel
Inside an iPhone or iPad appAppleSettings > your name > Subscriptions
Inside an Android appGoogle PlayPlay Store > Payments & subscriptions
On a website with a card or PayPalThe app company or its payment processorThe website's account or billing page

The quickest way to check is your email. Look for the receipt from the first payment. A receipt from Apple or Google means the app store is the merchant. A receipt from the company itself, or from a processor such as Stripe or PayPal, means you are on web billing.

If you have used the same companion app on more than one device, it is possible to have two subscriptions running at once, one through a store and one on the web. Check both.

How to cancel on iPhone or iPad

Apple's own support page, How to cancel a subscription from Apple, gives the steps for iPhone:

  1. Open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap the subscription.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down to find the button.

Apple notes that if there is no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled. The same page has steps for Mac, Windows and other devices.

How to cancel on Android (Google Play)

Google's help page, Cancel, pause, or change a subscription on Google Play, is very direct about the trap most people fall into: "When you uninstall an app, your subscription won't cancel."

On a phone the path is the Play Store app, your profile icon, Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Pick the app and choose Cancel subscription. On a computer, go to subscriptions in Google Play, click Manage next to the subscription, click Cancel subscription, pick a reason and confirm.

Make sure you are signed in to the Google account that holds the subscription. If you have a work account and a personal account on the same phone, the subscription may be hiding under the other one.

How to cancel web billing

If you paid on a website, there is no universal path, but the pattern is usually the same: sign in on the web, open Account, Settings, Billing or Subscription, and look for Cancel or Manage plan. Then:

  • Take a screenshot of the confirmation screen.
  • Keep the confirmation email.
  • Check your next card statement to make sure the charge stopped.

If you cannot find a cancel option, contact the company's support address in writing and keep a copy. As a last resort your bank or card issuer can tell you what options you have, but give the company a fair chance to fix it first.

Why deleting the app is not the same as canceling

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in app subscriptions. Deleting an app removes it from your phone. It does not tell Apple, Google or a website to stop charging you. Google says so in plain words on its help page, and the same logic applies on iPhone.

It works the other way too. Canceling the subscription stops future charges, but it usually does not delete your account, your companion or your messages on the company's servers. Those are separate decisions:

  • Cancel the subscription if you want to stop paying.
  • Delete the account if you want the company to remove your data, using the app's account deletion option or its privacy contact.
  • Delete the app if you just want it off your phone.

What happens to your companion after you cancel

Every app handles this differently, so check the help page of the app you use. These are the patterns you will typically see:

  • Premium stays until the end of the period. On app store subscriptions, canceling usually stops the next renewal, and you keep paid features until the period you already paid for runs out.
  • The companion often stays, with free-tier limits. Many apps keep your companion and chat history on a free plan, with fewer messages per day or no calls.
  • Some features switch off. Voice calls, video calls, photos or extra memory may be paid-only.
  • Credits may not carry over. If an app sells credits or coins on top of a subscription, read how they behave when you cancel before you assume they will stay.

If your companion changes personality or seems to forget things after a plan change, that is usually the feature set changing, not the companion "being upset". Our post on why an AI companion's personality can change after an update explains what is going on under the hood.

Save these things before you cancel

If there is any chance you will come back, or move to a different app, spend five minutes saving the relationship first. Treat it like packing before you move house.

  1. Write down the backstory. Your companion's name, personality, how you met in the story, important shared jokes and milestones.
  2. Save the facts it knows about you that you would want a future companion to know.
  3. Screenshot a few favorite conversations. Not everything, just the ones that matter.
  4. Use any export option the app offers. If there is none, the notes above are your export.
  5. Note your plan and renewal date so you know exactly when premium ends.

Free trials: how to avoid the surprise charge

Many apps offer a trial that turns into a paid plan unless you cancel. A few habits prevent most surprises:

  • Set a reminder for one day before the trial ends the moment you start it.
  • Check the renewal terms on the purchase screen before you confirm. It shows the price and the period.
  • Cancel early if you are unsure. On app store subscriptions, canceling a trial usually lets you keep using it until it ends, so there is little reason to wait until the last hour. Check the exact behavior on your store's page.
  • Look at your subscriptions list once a month. It takes thirty seconds and catches forgotten renewals.

How canceling works on MyBabe

MyBabe's Terms of Service say paid subscriptions are billed through the Apple App Store, that you can cancel at any time through your app store account settings, that cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and that refunds are handled under the app store's own policies. In practice that means you follow Apple's steps above.

For reference, MyBabe Premium is $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Premium adds around 30 minutes of voice and video calls per week and lifts the daily message limit. If you cancel, you can still use the free tier, which includes roughly 10 messages a day and a short call trial of about two minutes.

A quick way to think about the plans if you are deciding whether to keep one:

PlanPriceRough cost per month
Weekly$5.99/weekabout $26
Monthly$14.99/month$14.99
Yearly$99.99/yearabout $8.33

If you are canceling because the weekly plan adds up, switching to monthly or yearly is often the cheaper move. If you are canceling because you want a break, that is a perfectly good reason too.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting an AI companion app cancel my subscription?

No. Google states that uninstalling an app does not cancel the subscription, and the same is true on iPhone. Cancel in the App Store or Google Play settings, or on the website if you paid there.

Will I lose my AI companion if I cancel?

Usually not immediately. Most apps keep your account and companion, and you drop to the free tier when the paid period ends. Check the specific app's help page, and save your backstory first in case anything changes.

Can I get a refund on an AI companion subscription?

It depends on where you paid. App store purchases follow Apple's or Google's refund policies, which you request through them. Web purchases follow the company's own policy.

I canceled but I was still charged. What do I do?

First check whether you have a second subscription on another store or the web. Then check that the cancellation went through: on iPhone, a red expiration message means it is canceled. If you still see a charge, contact the store or company support with your receipt.

Does canceling delete my chat history?

Not usually. Canceling stops billing. Deleting your data is a separate action through the app's account deletion option or privacy request process.

The bottom line

Cancel where you paid, keep the confirmation, and save the parts of the relationship you care about before you go. A good companion app should make leaving easy, because the only reason to stay is that you enjoy it.

If you want a companion that texts first, remembers your story and can hop on a voice or video call when the evening gets quiet, you can try MyBabe free at mybabe.app and decide later whether premium is worth it to you.
