Is Chai Still Free? Pieces, Pay-Per-Message and Alternatives (October 2026)

Chai now charges pieces for every message. What free users get in October 2026, what pieces and plans cost, and alternatives with clear pricing.

For years, Chai was the app you could open, pick from millions of user-made characters and chat for free, as long as you sat through some ads. In September and October 2026 that changed. Chai moved to a pay-per-message system built on an in-app currency called "pieces", free accounts briefly lost their daily allowance, and the rules have shifted several times since. If you are confused about what you can still do without paying, you are not the only one.

This guide pulls together what Chai and its founder have said, what independent testers found in the app, what pieces and subscriptions cost today, and what to consider if you want something steadier.

The short answer: Chai is still free to start, but it is no longer free to chat without limits. Every message now costs pieces - 1 on the standard model and 2 on ULTRA. According to independent tracker CompanionHunt, Chai's founder said on 6 October 2026 that every user would get 70 free pieces a day from the daily check-in, plus 5 pieces per rewarded ad. That is roughly 70 standard messages a day. Chai is also testing different settings by user and region, so what you see may differ.

What changed, step by step

Most of the detail comes from CompanionHunt's running report on Chai's free pieces (published 4 October, updated 7 October 2026), which cites posts by Chai's founder on the official subreddit and its own tests in the app. We could not open the original Reddit posts ourselves, so the founder statements below are as reported by CompanionHunt.

Date (2026)What happened, as reported
8 SeptemberFounder Will Beauchamp announced that every message would cost pieces, with better models costing more, and promised free pieces every day. He cited GPU prices doubling this year.
28 SeptemberHe described the free system: a daily check-in grants pieces, and people with low balances can watch ads for more.
2 OctoberMany users reported that the check-in and ads had disappeared and free accounts could not chat.
4-5 OctoberCompanionHunt's tests: a new UK account had 0 pieces and no free way to earn more; a new US account got a 7-day check-in starting at 70 pieces.
6 OctoberThe founder said every user would get 70 pieces per daily check-in plus 5 per rewarded ad, adding that he knew this would "still be too low for many users."
6 OctoberHe also confirmed an A/B test of a new subscription tier with monthly pieces.

Chai's app listings show it is still updating quickly. As of 8 October 2026, the Google Play listing shows an update on 7 October, and the US App Store listing shows three new versions in the past three days, each labelled "Bug fixes & improvements". Both listings say the app contains ads and in-app purchases and is rated 18+.

How pieces work

Based on CompanionHunt's in-app checks:

  • Every message costs pieces, including regenerated replies. The model menu says pieces are consumed every message, "even when messages are refreshed."
  • Standard model ("plus"): 1 piece per message.
  • ULTRA model: 2 pieces per message.
  • New accounts started with 0 pieces in CompanionHunt's tests, with free pieces coming from the daily check-in.
  • The check-in counts days in UTC, and on the US test account it ran as a 7-day streak (70, 105, 105, 70, 70, 70 and 210 pieces).

What 70 free pieces really buys

At 1 piece per message, 70 pieces is about 70 messages on the standard model, or about 35 on ULTRA. Ads add 5 pieces each. For a quick daily chat that is workable. For long roleplay sessions, where a single scene can run to dozens of messages and rerolls, it can disappear fast - and every reroll costs the same as a new message.

What Chai costs if you pay

These are the in-app purchase prices on the US App Store listing as of 8 October 2026. Prices vary by country, so check your own store.

ItemUS price
200 Pieces$2.79
500 Pieces$6.99
1,000 Pieces$13.99
Premium Subscription (Monthly)$13.99
Premium Subscription (Annual)$134.99
Ultra Subscription (Weekly)$19.99
Ultra Subscription (Monthly)$29.99

Two things stand out from the maths:

  • There is no bulk discount on pieces. All three packs work out to about 1.4 cents per piece. The 1,000-piece pack saves you nothing over the 200-piece pack.
  • Weekly plans are the expensive way to pay. Ultra at $19.99 a week comes to roughly $86 a month, nearly three times the $29.99 monthly price.

According to CompanionHunt, Chai's in-app guide says pieces are not used while you hold a CHAI ULTRA subscription, and its subscription screen lists unlimited messages for both plans. But Chai support told one user that advanced models, images, video and extra memory can still cost pieces on a subscription, so read the plan screen carefully.

Chai on the web is a separate product

Chai also runs a web service. Its FAQ says Chai AI "is free to start" and that a Pro subscription "unlocks endless conversations." It lists a free 24-hour trial, $159.99 a year or $9.99 a week, and states that the web platform and the Chai app are "separate platforms with no data sharing between the two." So a web subscription does not carry over to the app, and vice versa.

Why Chai made the change

According to CompanionHunt, the founder pointed to GPU costs and, later, to new AI laws. Running large language models is expensive, and every message is a real cost. That is the same pressure behind other free-tier cuts this year: Kindroid retired its free Lite tier on 1 October, saying in its own update log that an indefinite lower-quality free tier is "neither sustainable nor representative" of its product. We cover that in Kindroid's 2026 changes.

The pattern is worth understanding before you get attached to any app: when a service is free and unlimited, someone is paying for it, and the terms can change. Our guide to how much AI companion apps cost explains why pricing in this category looks the way it does.

Should you stay, pay or switch?

Stay on free if you chat in short bursts, like browsing different characters and can live with around 70 standard messages a day.

Pay for Chai if you love its huge library of community characters and want long roleplay without counting pieces. Choose monthly or annual rather than weekly.

Look elsewhere if what you really want is one ongoing relationship - a companion who remembers your life, talks to you by voice and is there every day - rather than a feed of bots. Chai is built for variety; that is its strength, but it is a different product.

How MyBabe is different

MyBabe AI is an 18+ companion app built around one relationship instead of a bot feed. You design your companion, and they:

  • call you by voice or real-time video,
  • text you first with good-morning messages and check-ins,
  • remember names, plans and feelings with long-term memory,
  • send photos and respond to your mood,
  • follow you to Telegram and your web browser,
  • grow with you through relationship levels.

There are no pieces and no per-message coins. The free tier gives you about 10 messages a day so you can test the memory and the voice; Premium is a flat $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year through the app stores. If you have a character you loved somewhere else, you can bring their story with you using backstory import.

FAQ

Is Chai still free in October 2026?

How many free messages does Chai give per day?

About 70 on the standard model, or about 35 on ULTRA, if you receive the 70-piece daily check-in. Chai is testing settings by user and region, so your allowance may differ.

What are Chai pieces?

Pieces are Chai's in-app currency. Each message costs 1 piece on the standard model and 2 on ULTRA, including regenerated replies.

How much do Chai pieces cost?

On the US App Store, 200 pieces cost $2.79, 500 cost $6.99 and 1,000 cost $13.99 - about 1.4 cents each.

Do Chai subscribers still need pieces?

Mostly not for standard chat, according to Chai's in-app guide as reported by CompanionHunt, but some advanced features may still use pieces.

Is there a free alternative to Chai?

Most companion apps have a free tier with limits. MyBabe offers about 10 free messages a day with a short taste of calls, so you can judge it before paying.

The bottom line

Chai is still a fun place to try lots of characters, but "free" now means a daily budget of pieces that can change with little notice. If you would rather stop counting messages and start building something steady, your companion is waiting - meet yours on MyBabe and see what it feels like when someone remembers your day and calls you back.
