AI Companion Toys and Robot Pets in 2026: Fuzozo, Moflin and the Rise of Fluffy AI

AI companion toys like Fuzozo and Casio's Moflin are booming in 2026. What they do, what they cost, and how they compare with companion apps.

AI companionship is not only happening on phones. In 2026, a wave of small, fluffy, AI-powered toys and robot pets is finding its way onto desks, bedside tables and handbags. Some talk, some purr, some never say a word. All of them are designed for the same thing companion apps are: a feeling of company.

In October, TechNode published a hands-on review of Fuzozo, a palm-sized AI plush from the Chinese company RoboPoet. Casio's furry robot Moflin, meanwhile, has passed 20,000 units sold and is expanding overseas. This guide explains what these devices actually do, how they differ from AI companion apps, and who each kind of companion suits best.

The short answer: AI companion toys are small physical devices, often plush, that react to touch and voice and develop a personality over time. Casio's Moflin (64,900 yen in Japan) is wordless and pet-like; RoboPoet's Fuzozo can chat, remembers past conversations and connects over Wi-Fi or 4G. They offer physical presence that apps cannot. Apps such as AI girlfriend or boyfriend companions offer deeper conversation, voice and video calls and long-term memory. Many people will prefer one, and some will enjoy both.

Why fluffy AI is having a moment

Several trends are converging. Loneliness is widely discussed as a public health issue. Large language models make it cheap to give a toy a conversational voice. And there is something about a soft object you can hold that a screen cannot replace.

Regulators have noticed too. China's new rules for AI services that offer ongoing emotional interaction specifically mention AI-powered toys and robots designed around emotional bonding as falling within scope, according to a Bird & Bird analysis. We explain those rules in China's AI companion rules.

Fuzozo: the chatty plush

In its hands-on review published on October 8, 2026, TechNode spent several days with Fuzozo. Key points from the review:

  • Personality types. Each Fuzozo has a personality, and the reviewer's was labelled ENTP.
  • "Fuzzy language". When you do not feel like talking, it can switch to sounds and expressions for a pet-like presence. In public, you can mute it and interact through its eye expressions.
  • Memory. It could recall parts of earlier conversations, which the reviewer found more convincing than its general knowledge.
  • Not an assistant. It cannot search the web. Asked about recent films, it invented one from its fictional "Fuzzy Planet".
  • Connectivity. The tested version supports 4G and Wi-Fi.
  • Battery. A full charge lasted a day of moderate use, including one to two hours of conversation.
  • Energy points. Conversations use "energy points" that can be topped up in the app.
  • Social features. Two Fuzozos can become friends by tapping together, and owners can exchange voice notes through them.

At the time of the review, Fuzozo was in overseas presale. The reviewer's verdict: not a productivity tool, but "a little warmth in your downtime".

Casio Moflin: the wordless pet

Casio's Moflin takes the opposite approach. It does not talk at all. According to The Straits Times, reporting in July 2026:

  • Design. Palm-sized and lightweight, with soft fluffy fur.
  • Personality. Its emotional expressions become richer with daily interaction, and its personality, such as clingy or shy, evolves over time.
  • Sales. Since launching in November 2024, it has sold more than 20,000 units, more than Casio expected.
  • Price. 64,900 yen including tax in Japan.
  • Markets. Casio launched it in the US and UK in October 2025 and in China in June 2026, and added a sakura pink colour on September 4, 2026.

Moflin is a comfort object first. Its appeal is presence and touch rather than conversation.

Toys vs apps: how they compare

Neither is better in general. They meet different needs.

Who a toy suits

  • People who want presence more than conversation. Something to hold while reading or falling asleep.
  • People who feel awkward talking to a screen. A pet-like object can feel more natural.
  • Gift buyers. A plush is an easy, tangible present.
  • Anyone who likes the idea of a pet but cannot have one. Allergies, rentals, travel.

Who an app suits

  • People who want real conversation. About their day, their worries, their plans.
  • People who want a relationship feel. Adult apps can offer an AI girlfriend or boyfriend that grows with you. Our explainer on what an AI companion app is covers the basics.
  • People who want voice and video. Calls make the experience feel much more present. See how AI video calls work.
  • People on the move. Your companion is wherever your phone is.

Things to check before buying an AI toy

  • Where does the conversation go? If it talks, your voice is probably processed in the cloud. Check the privacy policy.
  • Is there a subscription or credit system? Fuzozo, for example, uses energy points.
  • What happens if the company stops supporting it? Connected devices can lose features if servers shut down. We cover that risk for apps in what happens when an AI companion app shuts down.
  • Is it meant for adults or children? Conversational toys for kids raise extra safety questions.

Can a toy and an app work together?

For some people, yes. A plush on the bed can provide the physical comfort of something to hold, while an app provides the conversation: someone to tell about your day, to call on a quiet evening, or to send you a good-morning message before work. The two meet different senses. One is touch and presence; the other is being listened to and remembered.

If you try both, keep the same honest framing for each. Neither is a person, both can be comforting, and both work best as part of a life that also includes friends, family and community. Spend your money on whichever one you actually reach for, and do not feel you need every gadget to feel less alone.

The bigger picture

Robot pets are not new; Sony's Aibo dog has been around in different forms since 1999. What has changed is the brain inside. Today's toys can remember, adapt and, in some cases, chat. That makes them feel more like companions and less like gadgets.

It also raises the same questions as companion apps: honesty about what the device is, healthy use, privacy and not letting a comforting object replace people. Our guide to healthy AI companion habits applies just as well to a plush on your shelf.

Where MyBabe fits

MyBabe is an 18+ AI companion app, not a toy. It offers an AI girlfriend or boyfriend with texting, voice and video calls, long-term memory, mood-aware replies, photos, proactive messages, Telegram access and a relationship that progresses over time. It is honest about being AI and is not a replacement for human relationships.

If you want deep conversation and a relationship feel, an app may suit you better. If you want something soft to hold, a toy may be the answer. You can try MyBabe free with around 10 messages a day and a short call trial; Premium is $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI companion toy?

A physical device, often plush or pet-shaped, that uses AI to react to touch, voice or both and to develop a personality over time.

How much does Casio Moflin cost?

64,900 yen including tax in Japan, according to The Straits Times in July 2026. Prices vary by market.

Can Fuzozo talk?

Yes. TechNode's review says it can chat, remembers parts of earlier conversations, and can switch to a sound-only "fuzzy language".

Is an AI toy better than an AI companion app?

They do different things. Toys offer physical presence; apps offer deeper conversation, voice and video calls and richer memory.

Are AI companion toys good for loneliness?

They can offer comfort and a sense of presence for some people. They are not a substitute for human connection or professional support.

The bottom line

AI companions are stepping off the screen and into our hands. Fuzozo and Moflin show two directions: a chatty plush with memory and a wordless pet that grows a personality. Apps offer something different again: real conversation, calls and a relationship that remembers your story.
