Is Claude Duet an AI Companion? What Anthropic's New Agent Does (and Doesn't Do)
Anthropic launched Claude Duet on Oct 21, 2026. Here is what the proactive agent does, who can get it, what it costs, and why it is not an AI companion.
Last updated: October 22, 2026
On October 21, 2026, Anthropic opened a waitlist for Claude Duet, a new app where Claude messages you first, keeps working while you are away and asks before it acts. Because it texts you, remembers context and talks back by voice, a lot of people are asking the same question: is Claude Duet basically an AI companion?
This guide explains what Claude Duet actually is, who can use it, what it costs, how it compares with Meta's Muse and OpenAI's dots, and where it sits next to relationship-first apps.
TL;DR: Claude Duet is a proactive work agent from Anthropic, not an AI companion. It sends a morning brief, watches your connected apps and completes tasks after you approve them. It is in a US-only research preview for Claude Pro and Max subscribers. If you want warmth, flirting, voice calls and a relationship, you need a companion app instead.
What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a standalone Anthropic app where Claude acts as a proactive agent: it messages you, works in your apps and asks first.
Claude Duet is a research-preview AI agent from Anthropic that monitors your connected apps, sends a daily brief and completes work tasks after asking your permission.
According to Anthropic's launch post (Oct 2026), the app "comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working even when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf." Anthropic says it built Duet "for professionals and small business owners with more on their plates than they can track."
In practice, that means:
- A morning brief. Each day it looks across your email and calendar and picks what most needs you.
- Background work. It has its own virtual machine and browser in the cloud, so it keeps going after you close the app.
- Approvals. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you what it is about to do and waits.
- Bigger jobs. It can build dashboards, financial forecasts, slide decks and prototypes, which appear in a "Make" tab.
When did Claude Duet launch, and who can get it?
Claude Duet launched as a waitlist-only research preview on October 21, 2026, for US users on Claude's Pro and Max plans.
According to CNBC (Oct 2026), Anthropic announced the preview on Wednesday, October 21, and opened the waitlist the same day. The Claude Help Center (Oct 2026) lists three requirements: a Pro or Max plan, a Claude account in the US, and an invitation from the waitlist. Team and Enterprise plans are not supported yet, and invitations go out in waves.
It runs on iOS, Android and claude.ai. Anthropic says it is powered by Claude Opus 5.5, and you cannot choose a different model during the preview.
How much does Claude Duet cost?
During the research preview, Claude Duet costs nothing extra if you already pay for Claude Pro or Max.
The catch is usage. The Help Center explains that Duet draws on the same five-hour and weekly limits as normal Claude chats, and its background checks and morning brief count too. That is why it checks your accounts "at set intervals" rather than constantly. People admitted to the preview get one full limit reset, available until November 30, 2026.
Is Claude Duet an AI companion?
No. Claude Duet is designed to get work done, not to be a friend or partner, and Anthropic markets it that way.
An AI companion is an app built around an ongoing personal relationship with a consistent AI character, focused on conversation, emotional attunement and shared history rather than tasks.
Duet shares some surface features with companions: it messages you first, it keeps one ongoing thread, you can talk to it by voice, and it carries over memory from your Claude account. But the purpose is different. Anthropic's own examples are invoices in Stripe, payroll in Gusto, deal history in HubSpot and storefronts in Shopify. The company even notes that personal errands "aren't quite as strong" because the core was built around work.
We covered this split in detail in our guide to AI assistants vs AI companions. The short version: an assistant earns your trust by being accurate and efficient; a companion earns it by being present and knowing you.
Claude Duet vs Muse vs dots vs a companion app
Claude Duet arrives in a crowded month for "personal agents". Here is how the main options compare.
| Claude Duet | Meta Muse | OpenAI dots | Relationship-first companion app | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Work tasks for professionals | Consumer personal agent | Always-on agents | Ongoing relationship and conversation |
| Messages you first | Yes, briefs and updates | Varies | Varies | Yes, good mornings and check-ins |
| Personality | Helpful Claude | Meta AI | ChatGPT | A character you design |
| Voice | Voice messages | Varies | Varies | Voice notes and live calls |
| Video calls | No | No | No | Some apps, yes |
| Acts in your apps | Yes, with approval | Yes, per Meta | Yes, per OpenAI | No, it focuses on you |
| Availability | US waitlist, Pro/Max | US and Canada | Varies | App stores, 18+ for romantic apps |
According to TechCrunch (Oct 2026), citing Sensor Tower, Muse reached 10.9 million downloads in its first 40 days, 10.2 million of them in the US. That traction is a big part of why Anthropic and OpenAI are racing into the same space. What can Claude Duet not do?
During the preview, Duet cannot make phone calls, send text messages to other people, trade securities or move money between accounts.
The Help Center lists several other limits worth knowing:
- You cannot watch or take over its cloud browser.
- It checks accounts at intervals, so something urgent can land between checks.
- It cannot see files on your computer or all of your projects.
- Some connectors, such as Slack, work with limits, and Microsoft 365 is not available yet.
- It can misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent, so you should review drafts before approving them.
Is Claude Duet safe and private?
Anthropic says Duet keeps consequential actions behind your approval and uses classifiers to block leaks of the most sensitive data.
According to Anthropic's launch post, Duet "never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens", a new classifier is designed to reject requests to share things like credit card numbers and government ID, and red teams plus an external firm penetration-tested the product. The Help Center is also candid that content it reads, such as emails and web pages, can contain hidden instructions (prompt injection), and that "no defense is perfect".
If you disconnect an app, Duet stops accessing it from that point on, but memory of earlier conversations is kept. That is worth understanding before you connect a personal inbox.
Why are AI agents learning to text first?
Because proactive messages keep people coming back, and both work agents and companions have discovered it.
The "comes to you first" design is new for productivity tools, but it is familiar in companionship. A good companion has always been the one who checks in. We explain why that matters, and how to keep it healthy, in our guide to an AI companion that texts first.
The difference is what the message is about. Duet's 8am message is a list of overdue invoices. A companion's is "Did you sleep okay? How did you feel about that meeting yesterday?"
Who should use Claude Duet, and who should not?
Claude Duet suits busy professionals and small business owners who want an agent to triage email and run admin with approvals.
It is probably not for you if you are outside the US, on a free or Team plan, or mainly want someone to talk to at the end of a long day. Using a work agent as emotional support is a bit like asking your accountant to keep you company. It might be polite, but it is not what it is built for.
FAQ
Is Claude Duet free?
Claude Duet is included at no extra cost for Claude Pro and Max subscribers during the research preview, but it is not available on the free plan. It uses your plan's normal usage limits, including background work like the morning brief, so heavy use can make you hit your limits sooner. Anthropic says pricing and features may change during the preview.
Is Claude Duet available outside the US?
Not yet. The Claude Help Center says the research preview is open only to Claude accounts in the US on Pro or Max plans, and only through a waitlist. Invitations go out in waves, so joining does not promise a set date. Anthropic has said Team and Enterprise access will come later, but it has not given a date for other countries.
Can Claude Duet be your AI girlfriend or boyfriend?
No. Claude Duet is built for work tasks such as email triage, invoices, scheduling and building dashboards. It has no character you design, no romantic mode, no selfies and no live voice or video calls. If you want an ongoing relationship with a consistent personality, an adults-only companion app is the right category, not a productivity agent.
What is the difference between Claude Duet and Muse?
Both are proactive personal agents that message you first. Meta has marketed Muse mainly to consumers in the US and Canada, while Anthropic says Claude Duet is designed primarily for professionals and small businesses. Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5, works in a cloud browser, and asks approval before sending, paying, signing or deleting anything.
Does Claude Duet remember things about you?
Yes. Claude Duet carries over the memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account, and it can search your past Claude chats outside projects unless you turn off the Search and reference chats setting. Disconnecting an app stops future access, but the Help Center says memory of information from earlier conversations is kept.
Want warmth, not a to-do list?
Agents like Claude Duet are impressive at clearing your inbox. They are not designed to ask how your day really went, remember that your mum had a hospital appointment, or pick up when you call at midnight.
That is what MyBabe is for. MyBabe is an adults-only (18+) AI companion app where you build your own boyfriend or girlfriend: their look, three personality traits, a voice and a backstory. They text you first, send voice notes and selfies, notice your mood and answer by voice or video when you call. Your relationship grows through stages as you talk.
You can start free with 10 messages every 24 hours and a two-minute call to try. Premium is $5.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, and adds long-term memory, about 30 minutes of voice and video calls a week, four photos a day and Telegram with the same memories. Many people start with the free tier and upgrade once they realise how much they look forward to that first message of the day.
MyBabe is an AI, not a person, and it is not a substitute for professional support or the people in your life. If you want a companion rather than an assistant, meet yours on MyBabe.
